Could you be a befriender?

Could you be a befriender?

The Isaiah Project is about friendship and making compassion real. Initially as a ministry of Southend Christian Fellowship and latterly as a separate charity, we look to create a culture that would reflect what the Bible says in Isaiah chapter 61: –Giving good news to the poor–Comfort for the broken hearted–Freedom for captives and prisoners–

Over the past 11 years we have grown from small beginnings to meeting more and more people who need help to get their lives back on track. We have developed a good working relationship with a number of property agents and landlords as well as working closely with Southend Borough Council in the process of providing housing. We have a team of befrienders who work alongside each resident to provide encouragement, ongoing support and friendship.

There are many in our community who wake up to a ‘terrible world’ in need of friendship, support and compassion to help get their lives back on track and have confidence to engage with society. The need for The Isaiah Project is undiminished and weekly we see new people at our Open House sessions. Today we help over 40 adults and 31 children by providing accommodation and befriending, all made possible by our amazing team of employees and volunteers, and we continue to grow.

The Befriender Role
The Isaiah Project are currently looking for new befrienders for some of our residents. This will look different for each individual but involves spending time together each week. The befriending team are managed by our lead befriender who provides support and training as necessary. Befrienders meet together bi-monthly for an hour for mutual encouragement and support in a session run by the lead befriender.
