The Knife Angel’s visit to Southend-on-Sea culminated in a powerful closing ceremony, marked by a Walk of Peace and Remembrance led by John Simmons, Chair of Southend Street Pastors, and David Webster representing Love Southend, an inter-church network inspired by God’s love and dedicated to the well-being of the city’s citizens.
Reflecting on the honour of carrying the processional torch at the head of the march, John Simmons expressed his pride in the participation of numerous Street Pastors, Prayer Pastors, and Prayer Partners. The presence of individuals from Love Southend and the wider public further highlighted the community’s unity and commitment to peace.
David Webster shared his joy in seeing many who had supported the Reflective Area over the past three Sunday afternoons join the march. He joked about the importance of setting a manageable pace on the march, and was glad that task was overseen by Adam, the Mayor’s Macebearer, ensuring everyone could participate comfortably.
The march was notable for the participation of local dignitaries, including the two new MPs Bayo Alaba, David Burton Sampson and former MP Anna Firth. While John Simmons acknowledged limited interaction with the Mayor and Mayoress, the presence of local leaders underscored the significance of the event.
As the march concluded, the sight of a large crowd awaiting the participants was a testament to the community’s engagement. A particularly poignant moment was the placement of numerous nightlights at the foot of the Knife Angel sculpture by police officers, members of the community and leaders in the city, symbolising a collective stand against violence and a commitment to peace.
The closing ceremony of the Knife Angel’s visit to Southend-on-Sea was a profound moment of reflection and unity. The dedication of the community, the support from local leaders, and the shared commitment to peace highlighted the event’s success, leaving a lasting impact inspired by a collective desire for harmony and understanding.
