A Morning of Gratitude: Honouring the Faithful Service of Mark Churchward

On Saturday 8 November 2025, from 10:30am to 12:30pm, friends, colleagues and partners from across Southend gathered to give thanks to God for a significant season of faithful voluntary service by Mark Churchward, as he steps back from his long-standing role with Love Southend on the servant team.

Hosted so generously by Southend City Baptist Church, the morning was planned as a surprise coffee gathering with delicious cakes and refreshments, but it became a rich and joyful time of worship, prayer and thanksgiving. Sung worship and shared prayer framed the morning, grounding the celebration in gratitude to God for all that has been given during this season of service.

Those present reflected the breadth of Mark’s involvement across the city. Alongside people from many church communities were representatives from civic and community organisations, including the council, police and hospital. Several of these partners spoke during the morning, offering tributes that recognised Mark’s consistent integrity, wisdom and commitment to unity, collaboration and the wellbeing of Southend.

Throughout the gathering, reflections highlighted the way Mark has served — often quietly and behind the scenes — facilitating meetings, encouraging leaders, praying faithfully and helping others work together across church and civic boundaries. His contribution to Love Southend has been marked by humility, generosity and a steady desire to honour Jesus in every context.

Many shared how Mark’s prayers have brought about significant spiritual and grace-filled change across Southend, and how his steady, God-centred counsel has enriched both personal lives and professional callings. He has been described as a Christian gentleman, a wise counsellor, a faithful intercessor, and a Kingdom influencer — yet those who know him best recognise that his greatest joy has always been found in serving quietly, faithfully, and wholeheartedly.

Warm appreciation was also expressed for Anita, whose faithful support and shared calling over many years has been integral to Mark’s volunteering. Together, they have exemplified perseverance, generosity of spirit and attentiveness to God’s leading.

A prayer shared during the morning captured something of Mark’s heart for this season and beyond — a desire that Jesus would be seen above all else, and that every encounter would quietly point people towards Him. It was a fitting reflection of a servant-hearted approach that has shaped this chapter of Love Southend’s story.

As Mark steps back from this season of volunteering, the morning was not an ending but a moment to pause, give thanks and look ahead with hope. We thank God for all that has been sown through Mark’s faithful service and for the fruit that will continue to grow in the city in the seasons to come.

On behalf of Love Southend, we give thanks to God for Mark and Anita, and for the example they continue to set. May we carry forward the values Mark has embodied so consistently — humility, prayerfulness, unity and love for the city — as together we continue to seek God’s Kingdom at work in Southend.
