Light up a Life and keep loved ones’ memories alive

Havens Hospices invites the community to ‘Light up a Life’ this Christmas in memory of their loved ones.

‘Light up a Life’, kindly sponsored this year by S. Stibbards & Sons, gives supporters the opportunity to honour those special to them by dedicating a light on the hospices’ Christmas trees in their memory. Those taking part will also receive a special keepsake card remembering those no longer with us, and a tag for supporters to hang on their own tree at home.

To take part, supporters are encouraged to make their dedication by Sunday 15 November. This ensures their loved one’s name appears in the Books of Remembrance at Canvey Methodist Church, Southend Crematorium, St Mary’s Church in Prittlewell and Fair Havens Hospice, on display throughout December and into 2027. Family and friends near and far can also view tributes on the charity’s online dedication page.

One of those dedicating a light to celebrate the lives of loved ones is Vicki George. Having previously lived in Southend-on-Sea with her husband Tony, Vicki dedicates a light in his memory every year. This annual Christmas tradition began around thirty years ago when

Tony and Vicki became supporters of Havens Hospices by dedicating a light in memory of their parents, Nelly and Albert George, and Connie and Sydney Deane. Vicki visits Southend Crematorium every year before Christmas and loves to see their names in the Books of Remembrance.

Vicki has continued their tradition since and says, “Although my family never used Havens Hospices’ services, Tony and I always felt it was a worthwhile cause. I have a strong connection with Southend after visiting my grandparents in Westcliff during the summer holidays at school. My father grew up here, and Tony and I lived here together before retirement, so I continue to support Havens Hospices even after moving away.”

When speaking about ‘Light up a Life’, Vicki added, “I take part because it makes me feel like my loved ones are being remembered. ‘Light up a Life’ is a reminder that they are not forgotten, and when taking part, it feels as though you and those special to you are helping another family receive the care they need.”

Every dedication will help raise vital funds so Havens Hospices can support every child, young person, and adult needing their expert, compassionate care.
