Our Vision

Westcliff Free Church:  standing firm in Christ and reflecting God’s glory to the Community around us in all that we do.

Our History

In the early 1900s, a group from the  Gospel Hall that was in Coleman Street held a tent mission near here (probably at the junction of London Road and Chalkwell Avenue).

We are not sure what the immediate outcome was, but our records show that this church formally started in 1910, either in a building already here, or in a new “Tin Tabernacle” that was erected.

In the early 1920s, the “Tin Tabernacle” was moved to the back of the site on rollers, and the Main Hall of the current church was built and opened in 1924.

The church was originally built with one room at the London Road end. This arrangement continued until 1980 when the existing layout was achieved, and the Main Hall was refurbished.

The Back Hall was demolished in 1983 (before it fell down!), and the existing building was erected and opened in 1985.

New toilets (and a shower) were installed in 2017, mainly to help our work with the homeless guests who came to a weekly winter night shelter that we hosted from 2011 to 2020.

Our Beliefs

We are a group of Christians from a variety of backgrounds who are united by our faith in Jesus Christ and our desire to share it together and with others.

We warmly welcome everyone to our services and meetings.

We believe that:

  • The Bible is the inspired word of God.
  • Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He became a man, died for our sins, rose from the grave, ascended into heaven and will one day personally return.
  • The forgiveness of sins and eternal life are ours only through faith in Jesus.
  • God’s power can be experienced in our lives today through the Holy Spirit.

We practise baptism (by full immersion), and we share Communion every week. However, both of these are reserved for Christians.

We are self-governing (under a Leadership Team) and self-financing. We encourage the active participation of our members in the church and in the local community. We support the activities of Love Southend and participate in the  Chalkwell Group of Churches Good Friday service.
