The front page wrap-around features on the Leigh & Westcliff Times (Issue 694, March 23, 2010) and is part of a campaign by participating Churches of Leigh & Westcliff this Easter. The campaign with its shocking, hard hitting headline “Oh my God… Why have you left me to die?” contemporises the words spoken by Jesus from the cross, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” – Matthew 27:46
David Elcock, part of the team that came up with the ad said, ‘The advert highlights some of the shocking true events that make up the Easter Story! The sensational story of Easter can effect every reader, the eye catching headlines hope to prompt every reader to explore the claims further – and send off for the free booklet Why did Jesus Die?’.
David Elcock added, ‘The churches are holding special music concerts, walks, sunrise services, Easter egg hunts and opportunities to reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus, Gods’ Son. Christians believe that Jesus died as a sacrifice for all of us, but rose again on Easter Sunday, defeating death. If we accept what Jesus did and ask for forgiveness for the things we all do that seperate us from God, this reconnects us with a God who loves us passionately – now that’s sensational.’
Invite cards have also been posted through doors around their neighbourhoods by some churches as a further way of making sure people can expect a warm welcome at the churches special Easter events.
Love Southend website visitors that don’t regularly attend church can also get a copy of ‘Why did Jesus Die?’ by Nicky Gumbel for free by sending their address details to Christian Enquiry Agency (Essex), FREEPOST WC2947, South Croydon, CR2 8UZ or by emailing enquiry.essex@christianity.org.uk (you will not be contacted again unless you request it).
