New life for disused area of playing field

They helped convert a disused part of the field, clearing away foliage, filling an old pond, putting in benches and moving a shed.

On a recent Friday, after nine days of hard work, they planted apple trees with help from the children, who had chosen the trees at a local nursery.

The church’s community worker, David Elcock, said: “Pupils wanted to use the area more and see it become a mini-orchard. They wanted to pick fruit there and make jam and pies to sell, encouraging healthy eating.

“They sold cakes and raised funds to pay for the work to be done. Some parents from the church found out and thought we could help out.”

The work completed by volunteers from Leigh Road Baptist Church in Leigh-on-Sea was done as part of the Love Southend project, which involves churches serving the community.
