Peace on Earth – En La Tierra Paz celebrate Peace in Colombia with an Exotic Fruit Tasting and Film Night.
Come and taste Mulled Mora – an alcohol-free alternative to Mulled Wine, great for hospitality at this time of year – as well as Mora patisserie, ice cream and sorbet. Mora is a deep red Andean Blackberry, which tastes like a tangy loganberry. This Mora is sourced from the mountains of Tolima, the heart of a former conflict area, from the first town to receive a public apology from the guerrilla.
In 2016 a Peace Agreement was signed in Colombia, ending 52 years of conflict during which time 7 million people have been displaced. The Agreement followed years of united prayer by believers in churches throughout the country and has been made possible by many very courageous and determined individuals. Following the historic peace agreement, 7,000 militia demobilized and settled in reintegration camps, learning agricultural and entrepreneurial skills.
Following Reception Drinks, we present how Colombia is transforming – and how families and congregations here in the UK are making a difference. This includes short video of smallholder fruit farmers, who are sharing their best agricultural practices with visiting groups from post-conflict areas. One young man, a former drug addict, now has a successful future growing exotic fruit, Lulo, with state-of-the-art drip irrigation.
With the peace process 80,000 families have signed up to say they would like to switch over from illicit crops. Our allies are teaching families like these how to cultivate wholesome crops responsibly and profitably. Find out about Dew Collector trays, an ingenious but very inexpensive tool for smallholders in the post-conflict areas. For the cost of 2-3 cups of coffee, a Dew Collector can reduce watering costs by over 50% for 9 years, while protecting crops through the twice yearly dry seasons, often exacerbated by El Niño phenomenon.
This event is hosted in partnership with members from the Latin American community in Southend: the Anglo-Hispano Circle of Southend; Betsaida CDR (Latin American congregation) and with the hospitality of Tesoro Coffee. We welcome people from every congregation in Southend to taste and see that the Lord is good – and invite you to offer Mulled Mora in your hospitality this Advent.
Not everyone can go to Colombia to experience this for themselves. However we have the next best thing! From 8.30-10.30pm there will be a screening of La Montaña, the true story of changed hearts and the turnaround of a confrontation between armed groups. There will be a retiring, freewill collection for Bibles for these areas for distribution by the ministry portrayed in the film. See trailer.
The event may be of interest to anyone involved in learning Spanish; Latin America – mission and/or ethical trade; events, hospitality and/or creating recipes; ladies groups, alcohol-free cocktails/film activities for youth; smoothie-making for children; alternatives to drugs; or prison ministry… and everyone who ever wondered if and how the situation in Colombia could be turned around.
