Valentine’s day is traditionally about couples and can be a be a bit grim if you are by yourself. Southend Churches Community Support (SSCS) are here to spread the message of self-love and that of your fellow neighbour; and are delighted to launch our Befriender Scheme in line with these principles.
Staying connected and supporting the homeless who have recently been housed is more important than ever during these uncertain times. With people being asked to stay at home due to Covid-19, isolation and loneliness is a worry to most people. But for those just starting out, it also brings additional worries and stresses.
The introduction of the SCCS Befriending Service which works in conjunction with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, will offer companionship plus the passing of basic practical skills. The service will offer a friendly listening ear and signpost to local support services.
Our Volunteers are caring and compassionate people who want to help recently accommodated people realise their full potential and to assist them to participate in activities in the community in the same way that everyone else does. They will contact each client weekly, typically for a 1-hour session and work with them on a one-to-one basis, doing activities of the client’s choice. Most of our befrienders work elsewhere and will undertake befriending in their spare time.
