BOOK OF THE MONTH

“FEAR, FUN & FAITH” by John Flanner (with John Cheek)
JOHN FLANNER was a typical Midlands’ teenager when, just before his twentieth birthday, he was quickly robbed of nearly all his sight, by a hereditary condition. Already struggling with a host of phobias and hang-ups, a twilight existence beckoned, on every level.
He instead has gone on to lead a remarkable life, in which he has triumphantly conquered his private fears, culminating in his Outstanding Achievement Award, at the very first national Civil Service Diversity Awards, in 2006. Along the way, the many twists and turns of his story led to him offering precious help to many others in a variety of circumstances; from disaffected teenagers to bomb victims to a top-flight English football manager.
FEAR, FUN AND FAITH is an inspirational, humorous and occasionally miraculous story, of a football-loving Brummie who learned to live with unexpected disability – and conquer his many fears.
John is a popular motivational speaker in government circles and amongst a wide variety of general and specific interest groups.

SOUTHEND CHRISTIAN BOOKSHOP IS NOW TO COMPETE WITH THE INTERNET!
"Are you a church leader? What's happening in the marketplace is threatening the future viability of Christian Bookshops in general, and our's, in particular. We've identified five areas which are cause for concern. These are:
1. The Church Is Getting Smaller - Tom Sine, writing in Christianity magazine, stated that "according to Christian Research, 10.2% of the population attended church every week in 1981. Today, WEEKLY attendance in the UK has declined to 6.5%. In 2020, it is projected to decline to 4.2% and 3.25% in 2025."
2. Competition between Christian Publishers and Booksellers - There used to be an unwritten rule, that Christian Publishers would never compete with their customers, i.e Christian booksellers/bookshops. However, that's changed with the advent of the Internet, for now Christian publishers have their own, on-line stores within their websites.
3 - Technological Revolution - Whilst the introduction of new, web-based products is to be welcomed, such as Wordlive by Scripture Union, they may often be available direct from the publisher and therefore to the detriment of Christian bookshops.
4 - The Internet itself - On-line shopping now accounts for almost one-fifth of all retail spending and it'll be no surprise to you if I say that probably our biggest competitor now, is actually Amazon, who enjoy far-higher discounts than we receive.
5 - The Recession - With the commencement of the credit crunch, and now what has become known as the Great Recession, like other retail outlets we're experiencing a dramatic fall in sales.
"AS NEVER before, we need your support, even if we have to work to the thinnest of margins. We're therefore proposing that, on bulk orders of at least £100.00net, excluding dated material, we'll give a 20% discount, but with a price guarantee where even this proves uncompetitive, we'll beat any published price on the Internet. For orders under £100, we'll still offer Churches the book agents' scheme, where you'll enjoy a 15% discount on all orders.
"Thank you for your support for the Southend and Chelmsford Christian Bookshops, over the years."

BOOK REVIEW
'Earthquake In The City' - Paul Slennett and Clifford Denton, reviewed by JOHN CHEEK for The Month
---------------------------
THE STORY goes that on the 2nd September, 1665 a man, naked accept for a crown of burning-coals secured to his head, walked through the streets of London crying out for people to repent and turn from their Godless ways, before He visited them with the fire of His great wrath.
Whether it’s a true story – and if so, whether there was any connection – a year later to the day, a Great Fire erupted.
Whether there’s any connection to a prophecy in February 1989, is a different matter. Paul Slennett, owner of the Southend and Chelmsford Christian Bookshops, attended a conference where he felt he received such a communication, one night. He needed to test and, if necessary, pass on a message that unless people took heed, a great ‘earthquake’ would hit the City of London.
FOLLOWING RECENT events - the credit crunch, the near-collapse of the banking industry and the economic recession - the book of the prophecy, Earthquake In The City, published by Kingsway in 1997, is now re-launched. Co-written with Clifford Denton, it remains unchanged apart a new Preface. The authors want the original prophecy to be heard, and for the ‘hearer’ to make up their mind, about it’s authenticity and whether there’s any connection to the square-mile.
Slennett is no stranger to controversy. A year before the conference, he felt called to proclaim that ‘Jesus Is Alive!’ In spring 1988, a postmark bearing the inscription was a familiar slogan on the nation’s post, for weeks. It transpired that 1988 was the anniversary of many important moments in British history…not least, 300 years since the Coronation Act, when we made an “oath to God” and effectively became a ‘Christian nation’. The campaign’s purpose was to remind the nation about God; now he wants to remind them of a prophecy. Dare you risk making the connection?
